Dove's work is characterized by his innovative use of abstraction to depict natural forms and landscapes, making him one of the first American artists to embrace non-representational art. Throughout his career, he maintained a close association with the influential photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who provided critical support and exposure for Dove's work.
