Constantino Brumidi
Constantino Brumidi was an Italian-American artist born on July 26, 1805, in Rome, Italy, and he passed away on February 19, 1880, in Washington, D.C., United States. Brumidi is best known for his work in the United States Capitol, where he executed numerous frescoes and murals, most notably the Apotheosis of Washington in the Capitol Dome. He was part of the Neoclassical movement, which sought to revive the classical art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Brumidi's work in the Capitol is considered a significant contribution to American art, blending European techniques with American themes. After emigrating to the United States in 1852, he became a naturalized citizen in 1857, dedicating much of his career to embellishing the nation's most important civic building. His legacy endures in the rich visual narrative he created, which continues to be a focal point of American cultural heritage.
