Cornelis Saftleven

Cornelis Saftleven was a Dutch painter born in 1607 in Gorinchem, Netherlands, and he passed away in 1681 in Rotterdam. He was a prominent figure in the Baroque art movement, known for his genre scenes, landscapes, and satirical works. Saftleven's oeuvre is characterized by its detailed and often humorous depictions of peasant life, as well as his imaginative and fantastical compositions. He was the son of the painter Herman Saftleven the Elder and the brother of Herman Saftleven II, both of whom influenced his artistic development. Throughout his career, Cornelis Saftleven's work was highly regarded for its technical skill and inventive subject matter, contributing significantly to the Dutch Golden Age of painting. His paintings are held in high esteem and can be found in major collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
