Edwin Dickinson (1891–1978) was an American painter known for his contributions to the Tonalist and Symbolist movements. Born in Seneca Falls, New York, Dickinson studied at the Art Students League of New York under the tutelage of William Merritt Chase and Charles W. Hawthorne. His work is characterized by its moody atmospheres and introspective themes, often blending realism with dreamlike elements. Dickinson's impact on American art is noted for his unique approach to landscape and figure painting, which influenced subsequent generations of artists. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely and received numerous accolades, including membership in the National Academy of Design. His legacy is preserved in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
