Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze was a German-American artist born on May 24, 1816, in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, and he passed away on July 18, 1868, in Washington, D.C., United States. He is best known for his association with the American Romanticism movement, particularly for his historical paintings that emphasize themes of nationalism and heroism. Leutze's most renowned work, "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (1851), has become an iconic representation of American Revolutionary history. After immigrating to the United States as a child, he later returned to Germany to study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he became part of the Düsseldorf school of painting. His work significantly influenced American historical painting, and he played a pivotal role in fostering cultural ties between the United States and Germany during the 19th century.
