Biography:

Gaspar de Crayer was a Belgian painter born in 1584 and active until his death in 1667. He was a prominent figure in the Baroque art movement, known for his religious and historical subjects characterized by dramatic lighting and emotional intensity. De Crayer spent a significant portion of his career in Antwerp, where he became a leading artist and influenced many contemporaries. His works were highly sought after, and he was appointed court painter to the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. Despite his success, details about his early life and training remain largely unknown. De Crayer's legacy endures through his contributions to the development of Baroque painting in the Southern Netherlands.
