Biography:

George de Forest Brush (1855–1941) was an American painter associated with the American Realism movement. Born in Shelbyville, Tennessee, Brush studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He is renowned for his depictions of Native American life, which reflect a blend of ethnographic interest and artistic romanticism. Brush's work contributed to the broader understanding and appreciation of Native American culture during a period of significant cultural change in the United States. In addition to his paintings, he was also an accomplished portraitist, capturing the likenesses of prominent figures of his time. His legacy is marked by his ability to merge academic training with a deep sensitivity to his subjects.
