Giovanni Baglione
Giovanni Baglione was an Italian painter born in Rome in 1566 and died in 1643. He was a prominent figure in the Baroque movement, known for his religious and historical compositions. Baglione initially trained under the Mannerist painter Francesco Morelli but later developed a style influenced by Caravaggio, with whom he had a well-documented rivalry. His works are characterized by dramatic lighting and dynamic compositions, contributing to the evolution of Baroque art in Rome. Baglione is also noted for his written work, "Le Vite de' Pittori, Scultori et Architetti," which provides valuable insights into the lives of artists of his time. Despite his artistic achievements, his legacy is often overshadowed by his contentious relationship with Caravaggio, which included a famous libel lawsuit.
