Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, known as Il Grechetto, was an Italian painter and etcher active during the Baroque period, born in 1609 and passing away in 1664. He is recognized for his innovative use of light and shadow, as well as his dynamic compositions that often depicted religious and mythological themes. Castiglione was also a prominent figure in the development of etching as a medium, contributing significantly to its popularity in Italy. His work influenced subsequent generations of artists, and he is celebrated for his ability to blend realism with expressive emotion.
