Biography:

Godfried Schalcken was a Dutch painter born in 1643 and active during the Baroque period until his death in 1706. He is renowned for his mastery of chiaroscuro and his ability to create intimate, candlelit scenes that evoke a sense of drama and emotion. Schalcken studied under the prominent artist Gerard Dou and became known for his genre paintings, portraits, and historical subjects. His work significantly influenced the development of Dutch genre painting, and he was highly regarded in his time, receiving commissions from various patrons. Despite his success, details about his personal life remain largely unknown.
