Goshun 呉春 (Matsumura Gekkei 松村月渓)
Goshun, also known as Matsumura Gekkei, was a Japanese painter born in 1752 and died in 1811. He was a prominent figure in the Shijō school of painting, which combined elements of traditional Japanese art with influences from Chinese painting. Goshun initially studied under the renowned painter Maruyama Ōkyo, whose naturalistic style greatly influenced his early work. Following Ōkyo's death, Goshun established his own studio in Kyoto and became a leading figure in the Shijō school, known for his delicate brushwork and lyrical landscapes. His contributions significantly shaped the development of Japanese painting during the Edo period, blending realism with poetic expression. Goshun's legacy is evident in the continued influence of the Shijō school on subsequent generations of Japanese artists.
