Huang Gongwang 黃公望

Huang Gongwang (1269–1354) was a Chinese painter and one of the most esteemed figures of the Yuan Dynasty. He was a leading artist of the literati painting movement, which emphasized personal expression and scholarly ideals over formal techniques. Born in Changshu, Jiangsu province, Huang initially served as a government official but later withdrew from public life to focus on his art and Daoist studies. His most celebrated work, "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains," exemplifies his mastery of brushwork and landscape composition, influencing generations of Chinese artists. Huang's approach to painting, characterized by spontaneity and a deep connection to nature, left a lasting impact on the development of Chinese landscape painting.
