Biography:

Jacob de Heusch was a Dutch painter born in Utrecht in 1657 and died in Amsterdam in 1701. He was associated with the Baroque movement, particularly known for his Italianate landscapes, a style influenced by his time in Italy. De Heusch was a pupil of his uncle, Willem de Heusch, and later traveled to Rome, where he became part of the Bentvueghels, a society of Dutch and Flemish artists. His work is characterized by its vibrant use of color and dramatic compositions, reflecting the influence of Italian masters such as Salvator Rosa. Upon returning to the Netherlands, de Heusch continued to produce landscapes that contributed to the popularity of Italianate scenes in Dutch art. His paintings are noted for their atmospheric effects and skillful depiction of light, which had a lasting impact on the landscape genre in the Netherlands.
