Jean Charlot was a French-born artist, born on February 7, 1898, in Paris, and he passed away on March 20, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a prominent figure in the Mexican Muralism movement, having moved to Mexico in the early 1920s, where he collaborated with artists such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. Charlot's work is noted for its integration of indigenous Mexican themes and his contributions to the revival of fresco painting techniques. In addition to his murals, he was also a prolific printmaker, illustrator, and writer, influencing both Mexican and American art scenes. His relocation to the United States in the 1940s led to a significant academic career, including a long tenure at the University of Hawaii, where he continued to create art and educate future generations. Charlot's legacy is marked by his cross-cultural impact and his role in bridging European and American artistic traditions.
