Biography:

Johannes Adam Simon Oertel was a German-American artist born on November 27, 1823, in Fürth, Bavaria, and he passed away on December 9, 1909, in Vienna, Virginia. Oertel was associated with the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century American art movement known for its romantic portrayal of the American landscape. He immigrated to the United States in 1848, where he became known for his religious and historical paintings, as well as his work as an engraver and illustrator. One of his most notable works is "Rock of Ages," which became widely reproduced and emblematic of American religious art. Oertel also served as an Episcopal minister, which influenced the spiritual themes prevalent in his artwork. His contributions to American art include not only his paintings but also his role in art education and religious iconography.
