Biography:

Joseph Foxcroft Cole was an American painter born on November 9, 1837, in Jay, Maine, and he passed away on August 7, 1892, in Winchester, Massachusetts. Cole was a prominent figure in the American Barbizon movement, which was influenced by the French Barbizon School known for its realistic and pastoral landscapes. He studied in Paris under the tutelage of Constant Troyon and Charles Jacque, which significantly shaped his artistic style. Upon returning to the United States, Cole became known for his serene depictions of rural New England landscapes, contributing to the growing appreciation of American landscape painting in the late 19th century. His work was instrumental in bridging European artistic techniques with American subject matter, thus enriching the cultural tapestry of American art during his time.
