Justus Sustermans
Justus Sustermans (1597–1681) was a Flemish painter renowned for his portraiture, primarily associated with the Baroque movement. Born in Antwerp, he trained under the tutelage of Willem de Vos and later moved to Italy, where he became the court painter for the Medici family in Florence. Sustermans' work is characterized by its detailed realism and the ability to capture the personality and status of his sitters, contributing significantly to the visual documentation of the Medici court. His portraits of European nobility, including members of the Habsburg family, solidified his reputation across the continent. Sustermans' legacy is preserved in numerous European collections, reflecting his influence on portrait painting during the 17th century.
