Martín Rico y Ortega
Martín Rico y Ortega (1833–1908) was a Spanish painter renowned for his contributions to the landscape genre within the broader context of the Realist movement. Born in El Escorial, Spain, Rico y Ortega initially studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he developed his meticulous technique and keen eye for detail. His career was significantly influenced by his travels across Europe, particularly his time in France and Italy, where he absorbed the plein air techniques of the Barbizon School. Rico y Ortega's works are characterized by their luminous depiction of urban and rural landscapes, often capturing the serene beauty of Venice and the picturesque vistas of the Seine. His paintings gained international acclaim, and he became one of the first Spanish artists to achieve success in the Parisian art market, thus paving the way for future Spanish artists in Europe.
