Biography:

Mervin Jules was an American artist born on March 28, 1912, in Baltimore, Maryland, and he passed away on July 28, 1994. He was associated with the Social Realism movement, which sought to highlight social issues and the human condition through art. Jules was particularly known for his printmaking and paintings that depicted everyday life and social injustices, often with a focus on the working class. He studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and later at the Art Students League of New York, where he was influenced by prominent artists of the time. Throughout his career, Jules also contributed to art education, serving as a professor and eventually chairing the art department at Smith College. His work remains significant for its poignant commentary on social issues and its contribution to American art in the mid-20th century.
