Biography:
Nakabayashi Chikutō (1776–1853) was a Japanese painter associated with the Nanga, or Southern School, movement, which was inspired by Chinese literati painting. Born in Osaka, Chikutō was initially trained in the Kano school but later embraced the Nanga style, which emphasized personal expression and the depiction of idealized landscapes. He became a prominent figure in the Kyoto art scene, where he was known for his delicate brushwork and poetic compositions. Chikutō's work contributed to the dissemination and evolution of the Nanga style in Japan, influencing subsequent generations of artists. His legacy is marked by his ability to blend traditional Chinese influences with a distinctly Japanese sensibility.
