Biography:

Nathaniel Smibert (1734–1756) was an American artist known for his contributions to early American portraiture. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the son of the Scottish-born painter John Smibert, who was a significant influence on his artistic development. Although his career was brief due to his untimely death at the age of 22, Nathaniel Smibert is recognized for his role in the colonial American art scene, which was characterized by a nascent interest in portraiture reflective of European styles. His work is often associated with the early American colonial art movement, which sought to establish a distinct cultural identity in the New World. Smibert's legacy is largely tied to his potential, as his promising career was cut short, leaving behind only a few known works that hint at his artistic promise. His contributions are often viewed within the context of his father's influence and the burgeoning American art tradition of the 18th century.
