Nicolaes Maes was a Dutch painter born in the Netherlands in 1634 and active until his death in 1693. He was a prominent figure in the Baroque art movement, known for his genre scenes and portraits that often depicted domestic life and the human condition. Maes was initially a pupil of Rembrandt, which significantly influenced his early work. He gained recognition for his ability to capture light and texture, contributing to the development of Dutch genre painting.
