Pieter Mulier the Younger, called Tempesta
Pieter Mulier the Younger, known as Tempesta, was a Dutch painter born in 1637 in Haarlem and died in 1701 in Milan. He was a prominent figure in the Baroque movement, renowned for his dynamic seascapes and stormy landscapes, which earned him the nickname "Tempesta," meaning "storm" in Italian. Mulier's work was heavily influenced by his travels in Italy, where he spent a significant portion of his career and was eventually imprisoned for alleged involvement in a murder. Despite this setback, his dramatic compositions and mastery of light and shadow left a lasting impact on the depiction of natural elements in Baroque art. His paintings are characterized by their vigorous brushwork and the emotive portrayal of turbulent skies and seas, contributing to the evolution of landscape painting in the 17th century.
