Qi Baishi (Qi Huang) 齊白石 (齊璜)

Qi Baishi, born Qi Huang in 1864 in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, China, was a prominent Chinese painter known for his unique style that blended traditional Chinese painting with modern sensibilities. He initially worked as a carpenter and woodcarver before pursuing painting full-time, studying under various local artists and drawing inspiration from nature and everyday life. Qi Baishi became associated with the Chinese traditionalist art movement, yet he distinguished himself by infusing his works with a sense of spontaneity and humor, often depicting subjects such as insects, shrimp, and flowers with vibrant brushwork. His contributions to Chinese art were recognized internationally, and he was awarded the International Peace Prize in 1955. Qi Baishi's legacy is marked by his ability to bridge classical Chinese art with modern expression, influencing subsequent generations of artists. He passed away in 1957, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to be celebrated for its innovation and charm.
