Samuel van Hoogstraten
Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678) was a Dutch painter, writer, and art theorist associated with the Baroque movement. Born in Dordrecht, he was a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn in Amsterdam, which significantly influenced his artistic development. Van Hoogstraten is renowned for his trompe-l'œil paintings and his contributions to the theory of perspective, which he explored in his treatise "Inleyding tot de Hooge Schoole der Schilderkonst" (Introduction to the Academy of Painting). His work and writings provided valuable insights into the techniques and aesthetics of the Dutch Golden Age. In addition to his artistic endeavors, he traveled extensively, including a notable period in Vienna, which broadened his exposure to European art and culture. His legacy is marked by his dual role as both a practitioner and a theoretician of art.
