Seth Eastman
Seth Eastman was an American artist born on January 24, 1808, in Brunswick, Maine, and he passed away on August 31, 1875, in Washington, D.C. Eastman was primarily associated with the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century American art movement known for its romantic portrayal of the American landscape. As a career military officer, he was stationed at various frontier posts, which provided him with firsthand experience and inspiration for his detailed depictions of Native American life and the American frontier. His works are significant for their ethnographic detail and historical value, capturing scenes of indigenous cultures and landscapes that were rapidly changing due to westward expansion. Eastman's contributions to art and history were further solidified through his illustrations for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's comprehensive study on Native American tribes. His legacy is preserved in collections such as those of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Minnesota Historical Society.
