Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792) was an English painter and a prominent figure in the Rococo art movement. He is best known for his portraits, which often combined elements of grandeur and intimacy, capturing the personalities of his sitters with remarkable skill. Reynolds served as the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, which he helped to establish in 1768, significantly influencing the direction of British art. His innovative techniques and emphasis on the importance of portraiture left a lasting impact on future generations of artists. Reynolds was knighted in 1769, further solidifying his status as a leading figure in the art world of his time.
