Jan van Goyen was a Dutch painter born in the Netherlands in 1596 and active during the Baroque period until his death in 1656. He is renowned for his landscapes, particularly those depicting the Dutch countryside and river scenes, characterized by a muted color palette and atmospheric effects. Van Goyen's work significantly influenced the development of landscape painting in the Netherlands, contributing to the genre's popularity during the 17th century. He was a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke and had a successful career, producing a large body of work that includes over 1,000 paintings. His innovative approach to composition and light has left a lasting legacy in the history of art.
