Joseph Stella
Joseph Stella was an Italian-American artist born on June 13, 1877, in Muro Lucano, Italy, and he passed away on November 5, 1946, in New York City. He is best known for his association with the Futurist movement, although his work also encompassed elements of Precisionism and Symbolism. Stella's vibrant and dynamic compositions, particularly his depictions of industrial America, such as the iconic "Brooklyn Bridge" series, significantly contributed to the visual language of modernism in the United States. After immigrating to the United States in 1896, he initially pursued medical studies before dedicating himself to art, studying at the Art Students League of New York. His participation in the 1913 Armory Show marked a pivotal moment in his career, aligning him with avant-garde circles and establishing his reputation as a leading modernist painter. Stella's work remains influential for its innovative use of color and form, capturing the energy and dynamism of early 20th-century urban life.
