Sarah Wyman Whitman
Sarah Wyman Whitman (1842–1904) was an American artist and designer known for her contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, she became a prominent figure in Boston's cultural scene, excelling in stained glass design and book cover art. Whitman studied under William Morris Hunt and was influenced by the aesthetic principles of the Pre-Raphaelites and the Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasized craftsmanship and artistic integrity. Her stained glass work, notably for Trinity Church in Boston, and her innovative book cover designs for Houghton Mifflin, left a lasting impact on American decorative arts. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Whitman was an advocate for women's education and played a significant role in the founding of Radcliffe College.
