Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599–1660) was a Spanish painter and a leading figure of the Baroque movement. He is best known for his masterful portraits, particularly of the Spanish royal family, and his innovative use of light and shadow. Velázquez served as the court painter to King Philip IV of Spain, which significantly influenced his career and artistic output. His most famous work, "Las Meninas," is celebrated for its complex composition and exploration of perspective.
